October train & bus strikes

Apparently there's a large national infrastructure maintenance strike beginning Oct 21, 2025 for all 3 levels of trains and may see cancellations. Google maps display a brown warning triangle sign of the disruptions: however on Trenitalia they aren't showing any disruptions.

We arrive on Oct 22 and imagine we'll still be impacted by the strike since it's the maintenance workers strike? Can any help or share any suggestions please? We're arriving in MXP at 11:20 and hoping to catch train/bus to Milan Centrale and head to Monterosso.

Do we book our train reservations or are we better off renting a car since the price for a private transport is outrageous.

Personally, I shy away from booking trains ahead of time on arrival day. What if your flight is late and you miss your train?

You are in for a long travel day if you go right to Monterosso from Malpensa: about 4.5 hours from airport to your destination. Driving after a long flight, jet-lagged? I know I would not.

Look up options at https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html. Use Malpensa Aeroporto for departure and Monterosso for arrival. There are options from 13:04, 14:34, 15:o4 and so on. Extremely unlikely all will sell out so you can buy on arrival. Or spend a quiet night in Milan after your flight and proceed in the morning, relatively clear headed. You could safely buy Centrale to Monterosso for the 23rd in advance.

I suggest that while you are waiting for more information on the strike, reserve a room for one night in Milan that you can easily cancel.

The trains you would take are operated by Trennord which sometimes has its own strike schedule and has a page with strike information on its website that includes a list of its guaranteed trains during strikes. Nothing is shown yet on Oct. 21 but you might want to find and bookmark the page. More information may be available in the week before th 21st. Looking a the list of guaranteed train times may help you with your contingency planning. Usually these are during morning and evening rush hour times. If the trains you need are affected, a key question is which 24 hours. If it starts just before midnight on 10/21 then 10/22 would be affected but if if starts in the wee hours of the morning of 10/21, it would be over by the time you arrive.
