I’ve browsed a bit & am so confused!!
Am I crazy to propose the following trip in Late September/October for our anniversary trip?
If not, please recommend your favorite places to stay, eat, to do!!
9/25/25 Fly into Rome
DRIVE ourselves to Sorrento & stay 3 nights or more, Day trips to Capri, Pompei, San Pietro and ?
Drive to Positano, Amalfi or Ravello, or all the way to our friend’s wedding destination 10/5-9 in Vietri Sul Mare. Stay 3 nights in each place.
Return to Rome for flight back home on 10/9 for late afternoon 10/10 flight. We have 14 nights, Like nice places but not super over the top expensive & fancy. Is it really that back to drive ourselves? Would it be better to arrive for the wedding festivities beginning 10/5 & stay 14 nights from then instead of a week earlier? Do the crowds reduce in those 2 weeks?
Questions… Is Capri Worth it? Is it wonderful to stay in Ravello?
Any & all suggestions are so appreciated!!
Thank you!!
Since this year is Italy’s Jubilee. It’s hard to say if October is going to see a significant drop in the number of travelers compared to September.
October can bring some rainy days, however, and that may affect what you’re able to do. In Amalfi there’s usually some rain during one out of every four days during October
Why do you want to travel by car? A car is of little use in Rome, and can be a burden on the Amalfi Coast. I recommend the trains from Rome to Naples and then transfer to a train that will take you to Sorrento. Sorrento can be used as a base to visit Pompeii by train, Capri by ferry, and Amalfi, Positano, Ravello and Vietri sul Mare by ferry or bus. Ferries are more reliable than land-based transit on the Amalfi Coast since they can’t get stuck in a traffic jam.
“When in Rome. do as Romans do”— and they take the trains and the ferries.
This is almost a daily question here in the Forum. There's so much helpful info already posted, and many of your questions have already been answered here. My favorites places and must-do's may be a snooze to you, so it will help knowing what your interests are, (eg hiking, food, art, wine, beaches ,Ancient Rome, photography, etc)
after you've reviewed many of the existing threads.
A car is a nightmare in the AC. The congestion is legendary. October could still be crowded, there's no shoulder season anymore.
I'd suggest -

-getting a good guide book
-Join area-specific Facebook groups
