October in Rome, Venice, Florence

Hello I am considering a trip to Italy with my wife and and wondering about best travel times. Neither of us have been before, though we are seasoned travelers. We are now somewhat limited as to mobility. What is October generally like in Northern Italy? I am considering flying to Rome then taking a train to Venice and from there to Florence. Or just take in one city which would probably be Venice. For years we have travelled during whatever the off-season was where we were going so are used to that mode of travel and prefer it. Organized tours not really our approach. Thanks for any information!

Hi
My husband and I spent entire month of October 2019. We started in Venice, Milan, Lake Como, cinque Terre, Lucca, Florence, Sienna, Sorrento and Amalia Coast and ended in Rome.
We flew in to Venice from London and out of Rome. We used the trains to get around and had a few day trips by bus and ferry. I did the entire trip planning use of. It was fantastic
Weather was lovely still south and was starting to get cool in thr North.

Also, Venice is amazing but lots of walking along cobble stone etc. Most accommodation have few elevators and lots of bridges and stairs

It all depends on how many nights you have to spend there. For three cities, a minimum of eleven nights IMO. How about flying into Venice, then take the train to Florence, and then to Rome, flying home from there. That way you're not backtracking and wasting some time on the train. Are you familiar with multi-city (aka open jaw) ticketing? Fares close to roundtrip to/from one city. We loved Venice, and could easily spend a whole trip there, but you cant go anywhere there without going up and down stairs to cross bridges and getting on/off the vaporettos.

Thanks all for the information. Just what I was looking for. I fear Venice may be eliminated from our plans but most helpfully to learn that October is a good travel month. Thank you all!
