October Amalfi Coast

My hubby and I are thinking of doing a quick trip to the Amalfi Coast in October.
We can fly on miles really cheaply to Rome. Here is what I’m thinking. Does it sound like a good plan?

Arrive Rome and train to Sorrento - Stay in Sorrento

Day 1. See Pompei
Day 2 See Naples
Day 3 move to Positano to stay and explore Ravello
Day 4 See Capri and Amalfi town
Day 5 train to Rome
Day 6 depart for home.

Any suggestions or advice would be great. Thanks!

5 nights? or 6 nights?

Capri and Amalfi are in opposite directions and don't really work on same day.
I'd stay in Amalfi rather than Positano- better transportation links.
A bit easier to see Capri from Sorrento.

If 6 nights
Sorrento 3
Pompeii, Naples, Capri
Move to Amalfi or Positano 2
Visit the other and Ravello- maybe visit Positano on the way to Amalfi-
Ferry to Salerno- train to Rome
Rome 1 night

If 5 nights I'd just stay in Sorrento

If you're looking for tours- Mondo Guides are great

We will be in Sorrento end of October. We are just doing a day trip hopefully with the Monetti’s group. I’ve tried to email them and am curious if they are off during January. She responded immediately in December but nothing in January.

We will arrive in Rome.
Train or taxi haven’t decided to Sorrento .
One day do Pompei next do a guided touring the Amalfi Coadt as suggested by RS.
Three nights total then we are heading to Naples for a couple of nights.

Are you seriously flying from the US to visit a seaside area for just 5 nights, during shoulder season? You have a lot of inaccuracies you need to do more research about.

Ravello is above, and a local bus from Amalfi, not Positano.
Capri requires a separate ferry ride from Sorrento or Amalfi and takes a full day to see. No debate.
There are fewer ferry runs in October, and the sea is rougher.
It takes a train change to get to Sorrento from Rome.
You want to read up on the Circumvesuviana train.

One thing you have right is that it is time consuming to get around the AC, and you can’t sleep there the night before you fly home.

5 nights? or 6 nights?

I'm wondering the same thing as Christine. It's unclear exactly how many NIGHTS you'll have on the ground in Italy, and it makes a difference where what you'll be able to do is concerned. For instance, did you plan to visit Pompeii on your first FULL day in Sorrento? if so your itinerary would look like. this:

Night 1: Arrive Rome and train to Sorrento - sleep Sorrento
Night 2: See Pompei - sleep Sorrento
Night 3: See Naples - sleep Sorrento
Night 4: Move to Positano to stay and explore Ravello - sleep Positano
Night 5: See Capri and Amalfi town, sleep Positano
Night 6 train to Rome - sleep Rome
depart for home.

Hopefully you are not planning to do Pompeii en route to Sorrento, all jet-lagged right off an international flight: not a good plan. As mentioned above, Capri is more easily/quickly gotten to from Sorrento and takes an entire day to explore. Ravello is not on the coast and is done by bus from Amalfi. I'd skip Positano altogether and stay in Amalfi to do both that town and Ravello, or skip Naples and do Positano as a day trip from Sorrento. To return to Rome, take a SITA bus from Amalfi to Salerno and take the train from there.

If you only have 5 nights, something will have to go.

Kay,

We will arrive in Rome. Train or taxi haven’t decided to Sorrento .

Not to hijack the OP's thread but taxi to Sorrento would be VERY expensive from Rome.
