We may not get the opportuity to visit Venice, Florence and Rome the end of October,'09. We may have to wait and travel over the Christmas/New Year Holiday late December. Anyone have pros and cons about the temperatures and these three cities during those months?
The only time that is bad for Italy is the time that you CANNOT be there. If it works out that you can only go in Dec/Jan then go anyway.
Given the choice, the weather in Oct/Nov has a greater chance of being more pleasant. Dec/ Jan will be cold, but hey you're from Denver, it will be cold there too.
Plusses of winter are thinner crowds, fewer lines etc. With a trade off for the temps.
Hands down I would go in late October/November. It has been really pleasant this fall. Last night was the first night we had frost in northern Italy. I think Venice is miserable in the winter. Fall would be much better.
I went to Rome just at the end of October for 6 days and it rained most of the time, but it wasn't cold.
I would love to go to italy during the Holidays, I think it would be wonderful and I wouldn't care about the weather.
Venice is an "outdoors" compared to Florence. If you have to postpone, you may want to drop Venice. There is so much to see, do and experience from Florence to Rome, you will easily fill up the time.
Another consideration is that the days (daylight hours) will be very short in late December. OTOH, it will be interesting to see how another country celebrates the holidays!
Whichever works out, you will have a great time.
I lived in Chioggia (50km south of Venice) for several years and can say that Venice is never miserable. It may rain a bit and being an outdoor type of city the fall is better, but the weather is much nicer than Colorado in December. And the holidays are really fun in Italy.
I have been to Venice 5 times and only in the winter (Dec/Jan). I absolutely love it! I have been there for New Year's twice and it was a ton of fun! I would highly recommend it... It is cold, but very romantic and not as crowded (although New Year's is crowded there). The previous poster said that it is miserable there during that time, but I highly disagree! It is very beautiful and very, very romantic!
