We (a group of 4 adults) are planning to travel on the Austrian OBB Ramjet from Venice to Vienna on 10 July 2022, departing from Venice Sante Lucia at 09:55 and taking the route that traverses the Semmering Railway. Apparently, the tracks will be under repair from Venice to Udine so alternative transportation (bus?) will be arranged by OBB for that leg of the trip. I have tried purchasing tickets from thetrainline.com but I get the message that "No tickets, available, please refine your search" for that date and time, presumably because of issues related to the track repair. I can purchase tickets from the OBB website for the entire trip from Venice to Vienna (with a disclosure about alternative transportation in Italy) but I cannot find a way to reserve any seats (we are planning to purchase the basic economy tickets - no refunds). We would like to sit together on the train. Does anyone know if one can reserve seats and if so, how it can be accomplished on this web site?
Just to note, it is Railjet, not Ramjet. When I look at that itinerary on July 10, I see that you will be on the bus from Venice to Villach, not Udine. You can reserve seats after you buy the tickets using the oebb.at website when you search for your train. You'll have the option to buy the ticket or buy a seat. The SparSchine fare is 29.90 Euro - I assume that is what you mean by basic economy?
Thanks for your advice tdw and Emily. I was looking for the SparSchine fare. It took me a while to navigate the OBB web site but I was able to successfully by the tickets I needed. Apparently, one is not able to reserve seats on the 09:56 train.
Karl - of course you can make seat reservations. Who told you that you couldn’t?
I have never encountered a situation where you could not make a reservation on a Railjet. In going into the OeBB system, however, the seats are not available yet to reserve. I would wait until your trip approaches and try again. I have ridden the bus out of Venice to Vienna and it really is useful to have a seat assignment.
My purchased tickets do not show any indication of a seat number and I am unable to specify a seat using the OBB app or the OBB website. I'll take your advice Emily and monitor the tickets between now and our departure on 10 July to see if seat reservations become available. I just assumed that I could not make seat reservations since the option was not available at the time I purchased the tickets.
