OBB or Trenitalia to book train from Venice to Salzburg one-way?

Also, I'm seeing "seat only - no ticket" option. What does that mean? I'm interested in not changing trains during the trip if that's an option.

Like many here our Italy trip in June of 2020 got cancelled, so we're starting all over again for 2022 - hopefully.

" seat only " denotes a reservation if you have already purchased a ticket

What web site are you using? Trenitalia ??? I am going to take a quick look but I doubt if it is possible to go from Venice to Salzbury without changing trains. Generally you use the web site where the trip starts.

My real dates are not until June 2022. I just put in various dates next month in the OBB website to get an idea of how long it takes - or if it's even possible?

My wife is forcing me to shoe-horn in Salzburg on a trip originally intended for Italy only........(so not thrilled about it).

Should I book on OBB or Trenitalia? Does it matter?

Since you want to leave from Venice, I would use Trenitalia. As Frank said, “Generally you use the web site where the trip starts.”

(To be honest, I myself would probably use Trainline, but I would check Trenitalia too.)

There are two changes on this route . While reservations are mandatory on Freccia ( high speed ) trains , the first leg to Verona is a regional train so no reservation required . The second leg to Innsbruck ( EC ) appears to be a DB ( german ) train ,and the third leg is an OBB Railjet . Reservations are not required on those , but available . I always take reservations . The cost is nominal and I like not having to look for a seat if the train is full

If you just want to look at schedules, use https://www.bahn.com/en
There are a couple trains a day, taking about 6 hours with a single change at Villach, Austria, plus a direct night train that gets you into Salzburg at 4 am. There are lots of other options taking longer, having more connections, or using a bus part of the way.

Keep in mind that it may be difficult to determine train schedules for 6/22. Just like our airlines, the pandemic caused huge schedule disruptions and it could be a while for all of the schedules to return to "normal" or whatever that might be in June 22. Personally I would not even think about train schedules until Jan or so of 22. Anything today is just a guess.
