We can take two weeks off in November or March --- When it is best to visit Italy? We want to eat!! Food markets, street food, authentic restaurants, specialty shops and any place else you can suggest. (Also, if we don't spend the whole two weeks in Italy, where else - nearby - should we go to taste local fare? Maybe in Switzerland?)
thanks for your suggestions,
Lee
Alex,
Our first trip to Italy was in November. Since then we have been back in September, October and late March into April. November would be off season for lower hotel rates and you are not dealing with people who have to travel on spring break. Fall is our favorite time to travel.
Don't worry about not being able to fill up two weeks in Italy. There is plenty to see and plenty of good food to eat. Rome, Pompeii, Florence and Venice.
By the end of this trip, you will be planning your next one!
Have a great trip,
Mimi
When we go to Italy it is ALWAYS in the Fall - Mid/Oct to Early November. Weather is generally good but, and here's the important point, when you're eating fresh TRUFFLES who cares what the weather is like. Truffles shaved over scrambled eggs (remember European scrambled eggs are on the runny side), truffle pasta, truffles shaved over well, just about anything except dessert.
In general, the November weather is easier to predict and deal with.March has much greater temperature swings. The food will be a constant during either time chosen.
Alex--I haven't traveled there in November but usually go every other year in March. We love going at that time--crowds are low and the weather is usually temperate. It may just be good luck, but every year we go we've had one day of iffy weather and the rest of the week it's been great. From what others have said I think you could do either way.
For food it has to be Bologna. Seems like delis, cafes and restos every few yards!
