November in Sorrento, Pompeii, Amalfi.

Our plane leaves for home the middle of November and I dearly want to see Pompeii, Amalfi, Herculaneum, Paetrum, but many hotels in Sorrento are closed for November and I'm afraid this is not a good place to visit that time of year. Is this true and/or does someone have any suggestions?

We spent a week there in December, right before Christmas, and it was great. We had substantial rain one day only, and that was a passing storm that was actually quite entertaining. It was cold and clear the rest of the time. The day we toured Pompeii was about 45 F and sunny. No crowds! Ditteo Ercolano. The day we went from Sorrento to Amalfi town was lovely. Ate outside, walked to Atrani from Amalfi, and no crowds! Didn't have to fight for a place on the bus. Some places in Sorrento close down, but we very much enjoyed Hotel Antiche Mura, which is very convenient and has great winter rates.

I spent five days in Sorrento with side trips to some of the areas you're interested in in October 2010. Don't know what December would be like, but from the previous reply, it sounds like it could still be rather lovely. We stayed at the Ulisse Deluxe Hostel Hotel. Don't let the name food you. I got it out of Rick's Steeves' book and it was more like a luxury hotel than hostel. Marble bathrooms, clean, spacious, comfortable bedrooms. I believe we paid 60 E each for two single rooms.

End Oct/Nov is one of the times we holiday each year in Sorrento (already booked for this year). Some of the smaller hotels close after the Nov 1 public holiday and others go into winter mode(ie lay off some staff) but there are still plenty to choose from. The really quiet time is after the New Year holiday period. IME there are still plenty of visitors but no cruise crowds and it should be easier to get around on public transport. Although that has become less true as the season has got longer over the years! You are more likely to have rain, November is the one of the wettest months but it has never impacted significantly on our visits. Also periods of strong winds which sometimes means that boat services to Naples and Capri are cancelled. But, with the weather these days who knows what this year will bring. Try the Palazzo Jannuzzi (a small B&B hotel) only two years old with modern bathrooms and located in the centre of town. Room 26 has a big terrace which gets the sun most of the day and a tiny kitchenette for making hot drinks/snacks. They also have rooms looking over Piazza Tasso. http://www.palazzojannuzzi.com/relay/
