really want to go back to Varenna,Lake Como but Milan is not bringing up any great ideas - perhaps southern Italy more my kind of Italian but happy to be wrong. Since Varenna is a positive, any suggestions of elsewhee to lengthen my trip. Maybe Switzerland, Austria. Help
Jackie,
One place you might consider is Stresa on Lago Maggiore. I was there recently and had a fantastic time!!!
In addition to touring the Borromeo Islands (Isola Madre, Pesce and Bella), Mt. Mottarone and Stresa, you can also take a day trip to Locarno (Switzerland) via the beautiful Cento Valli Railway, returning via boat. It's a nice day trip!
If you need further information, post another note.
Happy travels!
There is plenty to do in northern Italy.
You could for example make it a Lakes district tour. In addition to Como and the already mentioned Maggiore you could also include Lago di Garda.
Or Varenna, at bit of time at Sirmione on Lake Garda, a stop in Verona on your way to the Dolomites.
Thanks for info which I shall pursue fervently.

If you like quite lake front stays. Valsolda on Lake Lugano
On our trip to Italy in 2007 we really enjoyed Sirmione on Lake Garda and many of the small villages on the east side of the lake. Verona is also lovely.
I'd agree with Ken. Stresa is a nice little place! :)
