Northern Italy- where to go? Need R. S. Consultation services!

Hello,
Looking for some recommendations regarding spring 2025 trip to Northern Italy and I was totally counting on using the Rick Steves Consultation service, as they have been spot on in the past. So, without that service, I will try to reach out here for some help.

We will have 4 weeks and break it up into 2-2week stays in a different place. Our ideal trips tend to be different than most: we park ourselves in an Airbnb apartment, preferably in 'centro' the center of a small, walkable town where we can walk to get all we need- ( shopping, food, restaurants etc) and /or take train or bus to surrounding sites to see. We don't want to rent a car. From our reading it seems like Varenna would be a good first stop. ( We prefer to be near water.). We don't want a big, tourist city like Bellagio, but prefer a smaller town. Varenna seems to fit that bill. From there, we'l like to train to another area in Northern Italy for the remaining 2 weeks, but can't decide where to go. We loved Santa Margarita Ligue for size and location. Trying to replicate that somewhere else in Northern Italy.

Check out the towns along Lake Maggiore. We loved Stresa, but there are many others. Stresa is on the train line from Milan, so it would be easier to get to. You might also like Orta San Giulio or Lake Garda, but transportation options are more limited.

We spent two nights in Varenna last April. It is lovely but mobbed, especially on days when the weather is nice. To me, is similar to Bellagio, just not quite as fancy. It is definitely a tourist town.

You could look at Bellano which is one train stop up from Varenna. We ended up there in 2021 when we made last minute plans to go to Italy when the borders opened and needed an accommodation for seven. It is much more of a real town than either Varenna or Bellagio with two (or maybe 3) grocery stores and even a hospital. It has a beach that my crowd liked a lot too. There is a nice waterfront promenade.

The biggest thing is that it is not as convenient for the ferries as Bellagio and Varenna. We had to plan our day around the ferries as they did not run as frequently. One evening we took the ferry from Bellagio to Varenna and had dinner there. We then took the train back to Bellano. So being on the train line does provide some extra flexibility.

We really liked Bellano. We stayed five nights. If I was staying for 2 weeks, I would go back. Varenna is charming and I liked it a lot but it is too touristy for me to stay that long.

Perhaps Parma, Pistoia or Padua would suit you. They are smaller towns with good connections.

We were in Verona two weeks ago. Lovely town and Lake Garda is close by so there’s lots to see and do.

hey hey diane
check out lake garda (lago di garda):
lakegardatravel.net
earthtrekkers.com (25 things to do on lake garda)
click the towns & villages, many on the lake, see what they offer with shops, restaurants, stores, many wineries, transportation. train stations at bottom of lake (pescheira and desenzano del garda), buses ferries, taxis.
it's a gorgeous lake, much less crowded than lake como. several years ago we drove from venice to bardolino for their annual wine festival (festa dll uva: first week october), rented hotel on lake, a short stroll to the entrance for "eat drink & be merry party!!"
rossiwrites.com
sanctuary of madonna della corona. church built into the rock walls like it's hanging over the cliff. if interested check transporation there if you're not driving.
rossiwrites.com/lake garda
thecrazytourists.com/15 best things to do in brescia.
train to town, visit the museo mille miglia (italian classic car collection)
wheatlesswanderlust.com/one day visit to verona
so many people, places, things to see and do on and near lake garda. there really is not a shoulder season anymore in many cities. there have been over 15 million people (USA, Europe and other countries) visiting italy, many posts all list the same places that gets so busy and crowded, packed like sardines, long lines, restaurants so busy and full, attractions and activities can be so crazy. stay away from those places. also it is the italian jubilee 2025 all year long, many will be further south and stay clear of rome and the vatican!!!
maybe check out turin, lucca or the italian riviera. do a multicity air flight so no backtracking.
airbnb/experiences/lake garda
getyourguide.com
third party reseller, we used them in 4 different cities with no issues.
stop at a tourist kiosk in town center and see what offers are available. have a great trip and enjoy
aloha

Diane -- below is a video link that I am finding very useful in planning a trip to Northern Italy in 2025. It is called "Northern Italy Top 20 Towns" and is thoughtfully narrated providing useful info on some known and lesser known beauties such as: Albenga, Bellagio, Varenna, Bergamo, Brescia, Iseo, Peschiera,Vicenza, Padua and Mantua (this is just a partial listing). Much of it can be easily accomplished by train and the author gives travel time info between the various destinations. Hopefully, a few of these will catch your eye.

Thanks, everyone -oh my goodness, there are too many choices - but we have decided on Varenna as a base with expectations of ferry rides to visit the others during our stay. This will meet our needs.
