Northern Italy - Verona or Piemonte (Alba/Asti/Bra)?

We are putting together a vacation in late April-May that starts with the first 8 or 10 days in northern Italy (flying into and out of Milan) followed by somewhere between 10 days and two weeks in Paris.

In Italy, we'll spend a couple of days around Milan and/or lakes in the area (e.g., Lago d'Orta, which isn't far from Malpensa airport) and will head out from there. We like settling down in one place (often fairly rural) for a while.

So my question for those who have gone to Italy is a choice between two regions to stay for about a week (1) in the vicinity of Lago di Garda and Verona; or (2) in the Piedmont region in the vicinity of Asti, Alba and Bra (no wisecracks about the name - it's the home of the Slow Food Movement).

Any thoughts of places to stay, unusual places to see, restaurants, wine regions, etc. would be appreciated to help us figure this out.

We have found some on-line advertisements for interesting and not terribly expensive B&Bs and apartments (60-90 euros/day) in both regions. We will be renting a car, which will give us flexibility to travel in villages and towns close to where we are staying and for longer day trips (maybe even one overnight). We could also take a train to get to places where the car would be unhelpful (for example if we wanted to go to Venice for a day from near Verona).

You may want to consider the Dolomites. From Verona you could drive toward Bolzano where you could stop and visit Otzi the ice man in the museum there and continue on the Great Dolomite Road. Follow the route as describe in RS guidebook. Spend a few days in this area and then drive on to Venice. Park in the Mestre parking lot across from the train station (4,50 euro per day in 2007) and take the short and inexpensive train ride on in to Venice. You could also do that in reverse. Leave Verona and go to Venice and from there take the Great Dolomite Road toward Cortina d' anpezzo. On your way back to Milan stop in Bolzano and see Otzi. The Dolomites offer stunning scenery. Although the Piedmont area is nice I prefer the Dolomites. If you decide to go to the Piedmont area you may want to Drive on up to Aosta and through the Mt. Blanc tunnel to Chamonix. Chamoinix is a beautiful town. Take the lift to the Aiguille du Midi. If open you could take the lift from the Italian side near Courmeyer (La Palud) and go to the French side of the Mt Blanc massif. The Italian side was closed in May 2007 (many lifts shut down in May) so we had to drive to Chamonix to ride the cable car up the mountain.
Back to the Dolomites. We spent a night in Canazei and a night in the Alpi di siusi. Paul from New Jersey, who contributes to these forums and is much more knowledgeable about the Dolomites than I, recommends staying at the Ciasa Montanara in La Villa, Alta Badia. Maybe he will weigh in and offer some other tips for you in that area. Since you are planning on renting a car, I would also recommend taking a gps.

We enjoyed our time in the Piemonte; but the Veneto has much more to do and see. The Piemonte is all about food and wine. If you decide on it, e-mail me and I'll give you recommendations.

The Veneto has great food and wine, also, but many wonderful sights, as well. Verona, Vicenza, Padova, Bassano del Grappa, Asolo, Este . . . are all worth visiting.
The Alto Adige (Bolzano, Dolomites) is nearby, beautiful and interesting, too. There is a wine route which between Bolzano and San Michele. We found the Cadogan guide book, "Northeast Italy" to be an invaluable resource for plaaning our trip to that region.

Bill,i would strongly recomend lago di garda. It is a magnificent area.a relatively big lake with small beautyful towns surrounded. We took a long, lazy drive around the lake on the first day and ended up in Sirmione for an evening stroll and nice dinner.Second day went to GARDALAND(a pretty good immitation of Disney World).Had a blast.April-may is the best time, becouse the area is not besieged yet by german tourists. You migh be able to catch some sunshine on the beach even.for more info check :www.lagodigarda.it .good luck
