Northern Italy the first week in May...Sweater or NO?

My family and I will be visiting Florence in the very beginning of May. Is it warm in the Tuscany region or will I need a sweater?

Also, we will be traveling to Sicily for 1 day (May 7). Will it be warm enough to take a dip in the Tyrrhenian/Mediterranean Sea?

We had cool temps and rain first week of May in Tuscany last year

You are traveling to Sicily for just one day??

Yes, we will be on a cruise after our visit to the Northern region.

It depends... a few years ago we had a hot May, another May (2019) was a lot cooler.... I'm guessing down in Sicily your water will be warmer than we have in Emilia Romagna but this year in Capri/Salerno at the beginning of May the water was not warm.

I would bring a sweater or lightweight micro-thin thermal top that you can layer under a rain jacket, if needed.

Visited Tuscany, including Florence, in late April this year and it was fairly warm - sunny and upper 70s most days as I recall. It was cooler at night but wasn’t uncomfortably cold unless you were sitting outside for a late dinner.

If you’re a warm person no need for a sweater, but if you run cool and plan to be outside after dark then it could be worth it.

Pack some kind of light covering. You just never know. Tuscany may have cool evenings. Or not. But if you are also going on a cruise, I would point out that the outside decks can be cool in the evenings, as can the dining rooms and theatre. DH doesn't seem to mind this, but I almost always need a pashmina.

To dip your toes in, maybe. The water will be quite cool still

Yes. You will almost certainly need a sweater (light or heavy is difficult to predict) for the evening.
Water temperatures in early May is around 15-20 C (in the 60s F). If you have a pool, measure the temperature and when it's around 65F, get inside. That is the max temperature you will experience in early May. If you don't have a pool or a jacuzzi, try your bathtub.

"Warm" is a subjective thing.

A resident of Anchorage and a resident of Miami, likely will have different definitions of 'warm' and whether a sweater is necessary to be comfortable.

It's always a good idea to have at least one warm layer and a, separate, water-proof rain shell (that doubles as a wind breaker). That will give you the flexibility for a wide range of weather. Opt for something less bulky (lightweight, preshrunk merino wool sweater, or similar, comes to mind). Don't pack a cotton sweater, they're bulky and don't perform as well, especially if they get wet.

I wouldn't even travel to Sicily without a sweater and a rain jacket. We were there this past May and had unseasonably cool weather and lots of rain.

You just never know.
