i am traveling with a group of 5 adults and trying to decide if we should plan our lake vacation on our own or go with a tour group we need help with where to stay on the lakes and which accommodations are recommended and how many nights we would like to take day trips from one hotel

You will have to decide which lake region, what types of activities/destinations interest you, how long you have for the trip, and what you want to spend....at LEAST.....
I would say, if you have no idea on where you want to go, looking at a sample itinerary from a tour company would at least give you a list of places/activities to start looking at......or you could start at google maps....
