Northern Italy - Lake region and Dolomites

In September my husband and I will land in Milan and rent a car to travel for 8 nights. What is the best travel path (without too much wasted time or doubling back) for this itinerary or something similar (your suggestions).

Milan airport to Dolomites for 2 nights (best area to stay?)
Dolomites to Bellagio for 2 nights
Bellagio to Stresa for 1 or 2 nights
Stresa to Orta San Giulio for 2 nights

We've never been to this part of Italy and are looking to stay in small, quaint hotels/lodging, hiking (not too arduous), boat rides on lakes, all the beauty this region of the world has to offer.

All information, suggestions and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. - Thanks

Probably not a good idea to drive so far upon arrival after an overnight flight

hey hey socon0759
where are you arriving from? (USA, Canada, etc) what time does flight arrive in milan and are you departing from venice for flight home.
make sure you get an IDP (aaa.com/IDP) for each driver before flying out, it is mandatory in italy. look at the car rentals available at airport (automatic, one way drop off fee (many charge since cars need to get back to place rented), or another city insurance costs. many posters here will give you the good bad and ugly. you have to decide what's your priority
stay near airport or milan, your decision. budget, parking available (free or cost). your time is short for these places to travel to with 1-2 days, spending more time on the road looking out window, checking in/out hotels (check-in 2-4pm; check-out 10-11am), add more driving time not only what a google/michelin map says. good luck & happy travels
