In Spring 2019. -- I have one unscheduled day and am wondering what you would suggest.
Should I go to a new town for just one night (like Parma for example or some other town) or build another day into where we are already visiting.
Fly Seattle to Pisa - train immediately to Manarola (we have been to Pisa and Lucca)
Manarola - 4 nights: R & R with day trip to Portofino/St Marg and one day on water w/stop in Portovenere. We hiked the trails the last visit in 2011)
Turin - 3 nights (new to us)
Piedmont wine country with car - 4 nights (new)
Varenna - 3 nights (new). We have been to Verona (loved it) and Venice.
Milan - 2 nights : 1 1/2 day to see city sights then fly home early AM to Seatte from Linate.
We will be traveling by train with the exception of the rental car for Piedmont. We like towns as oppose to big cities but my husband needs something a little more than cute towns and big churches. We love to walk, drink wine and eat mostly. We pretend to be relaxers but we are doers.
Renee,

It would help to know when your unscheduled day falls, in terms of the itinerary you mentioned.
If it's at the end of your trip, you may consider visiting Stresa, on Lake Maggiore, as a day trip from Milan.
It's an easy one hour train ride (each way) from Milano Centrale.
Your trip sounds wonderful, enjoy!
Good point. At this point the extra day can go where as I have not made any reservations with the exception of our first four days in CT.
I've enjoyed visiting the Borromean Isles from Stresa.
Another possibiluty is Bergamo. That could be a day-trip from Milan.
You could also do a loop trip into Switzerland, incorporating the Centovalli train trip between Domodossala and Locarno. It would mean a lot of hours on the train, but it's a very scenic route. Might be too static for your husband, though.
Thank you.
I'm going to add a day to Varenna and take a day trip. Possibly Bergamo. I'm also interested in the train trip through the Alps but am a little concerned about heights (I live in Washington and driving to Sunrise at Mt Rainier is almost more than I can deal with). If anyone with heights issues been on the Bernina Express train I'd appreciate your input?
