Northern Italy in mid-May in light of coronavirus?

We are planning on traveling in Italy for 21 days, May 15-June 5th. Our reservations include flying in and out of Milan, travelling by train and car through Venice, Tuscany, Mediterranean coast and as far south as Rome. I want to be optimistic that this health crisis will be past by the time we begin our adventure but am still a little concerned. Any thoughts?

A second question is about travel insurance. We were not offered insurance when we purchased our airfare. I have found insurance plans available for travel but want to know what others have experienced. What company works for you? Does insurance cover a health pandemic?

My suggestion would be to check cancellation deadlines for hotels & tours that you’ve booked and wait until then to make a decision. We’re scheduled to go to Lake Como via Milan in mid-April. We have until late March to cancel our hotel without penalty - if the travel advisory remains at level 3, we’ll cancel then but don’t see much benefit in canceling sooner than necessary. Just my two cents!

We are also planning to be in the same area around the same time (7 May - 25 May, Switzerland and Italy). We are flying into Zurich and out of Rome. I am just going to monitor the situation until 1-2 weeks prior to departure and then decide if we need to cancel or if we need to modify the plans to travel different places. We are traveling with Ages 60+ people, some of which have varying issues, although we are in our 40s with 2 smaller kids.

We have cancel for any reason travel insurance, and bought within a couple of days of buying the flights (as is required for all policies that I looked at). The Coronavirus became a foreseeable event sometime around the end of January, so insurance will exclude losses related to it in many, many cases. You’ll need to be very specific with what is/is not covered at the time of purchase to ensure that you are covered for what you need. For example, if you got sick with it while there...are you covered, etc. I believe, but don’t know for sure, that you’re going to find that cancel for any reason insurance isn’t available to you, unless you have very recently made reservations (like in the last week). We are using TravelEx.

I recommend that you consider your sunk costs, and at what point you start to incur more charges, and go from there with when you start to lose more money. for example, if your flight costs are $1000/each, that’s a sunk cost, although you may get a credit or refund from the airline. if your hotels don’t start to charge you until a week before departure, maybe decide then. Also factor in your sanity 😂 one of my traveling partners may need to decide....like next week....so she doesn’t go nuts with anxiety.

I feel like early May is a way different picture than right now....a lot of additional information will be available, so I think I’d do not a thing in your case, until you start to loose more money. You could research ways to modify the vacation too, like going to another location.

Kim, we have plans to be in Lake Como the same time as you all. Nothing we can do now, but wait and watch.
Good luck and health to us all!

May is a long way off in terms of this disease. I just don't think you can make an accurate prediction this far off. The virus has started to become active here in the US and by May there simply may not be a great deal of difference between your risk of getting it here and your risk of getting it in Northern Italy. Who knows if travel restrictions will still be in place?

My May trip also in question. As usual, all my hotel reservations on booking.com are cancelable.

I spoke to a Delta ticketing agent this afternoon and she is of a belief this nightmare will be over by mid May.

But far more importantly I pay attention to niche stock market news and they also believe this goes away as soon as warm weather comes. They even have analysts studying it because they intend to make money from it when the market begins to turn and reinflate

Have you looked at what is covered under your credit card? I have a friend who has led tours for years. (She's actually met Rick Steves but is associated with another company.) While she offers insurance for her tours, she feels you will get good coverage and response from your card company for no extra money. It might be worth a call to find out.

I booked my flights and most of my hotels through an airline. Payment isn't due April. On their website, they already have information about dealing with CV. However, my sister's biggest fear is what if SHE gets the virus and can't travel.

You are all very kind to respond and offer suggestions. I will dive into each one later today and let you know what I discover. Thank you!

We have a trip planned from April 19-May 26 so I have been looking at things carefully. Our plane ticket is paid for and there is nothing we can do about that. In reading on other forums, I think you may need to accept that your plane ticket is a sunk cost.

In my case I have been using Homestay and Booking.com and a few others. Most of the bookings on Booking.com can be cancelled up to a week before. Homestay are being a bit weird about this, but they have agreed to credit me if I make changes. Fortunately, it totals only about $200 in booking fees. I had to argue that point in an email.

Since we have never been to Italy and no matter how we plan, we are going to miss something else, I have a few gameplans depending on the situations:

  1. Certain places are off limits. It is possible Florence or Venice or who knows could get closed down. So, we go to Genoa or Torino or perhaps we just do our whole trip in the south.

  2. Italy becomes basically a no-go. In this case, we will see if we can change the Emirates flight to somewhere else OR take the flight to Rome and then book a short flight somewhere else and come back to Italy next year.

  3. Unfortunately, the third possibility is we get it ourselves. I personally think that unless (and we do not know this) the virus wains in warmer weather as spring comes, it is likely going to spread everywhere. I live in New Zealand and we just had our first confirmed case. And for us, winter is coming.

A lot can happen in a few weeks. We leave on a trip in mid-May and that's nearly 11 weeks away. It's too early to panic. Finally, it seems governments are taking it seriously. If it gets bad, there may be intervention to stop travel and fights will halt. That puts the airlines in a completely different position. I am sincerely glad that my vacation is planned for later. If you planned to leave in the next couple weeks, these are difficult decisions.
