We are planning to visit Zurich for a couple of days next spring, then go to both the Lake District and the Cinque Terra in Italy. We know Zurich well, having lived there for a few years back in the 90's. We've also spent time in Italy, but this will be our first visit to both the lakes and the Liguria region. Here's our questions: 1. Is it relatively hassle-free to take the train from Zurich to Como in the Italian lakes? Is there a route that is notably scenic? 2. If we only plan 2-3 days in the lakes, is Como a good base of operations?
3. What's the best way to go to the Cinque Terra from Como? Thanks!
You will have to change trains in Milan but the route between Zurich and Milan is very scenic. Don't know if you have much choice between the two for the route.
I always fly into Zurich and take the train down into Italy. The route is very scenic. I always base on Lake Maggiorie so I can't help you with the Como area. I have stayed in Stresa, Baveno and Cannobio while in the Lake Maggiorie area.
I haven't even looked into Lake Maggiore. Thanks; I'll check it out.
