Northern italy

We have a week to travel Florence to Venice. (2seniors). Taking train to Florence after meeting in Zurich. Flying home from Venice on 6-2-13. After 3nights in Florence, we have 3 nights to stay in villages. Third nite is reserved in Asolo. We will either rent car or travel by train. Only downside with train that isn't direct: slinging our one each large suitcases, necessary because of business attire in Zurich. Can you recommend best stops for May 28 and 29? And what is best way to make all train reservations? Or is rental car best? We are experienced international drivers. Also, does Italy have any problem with car rental if you are 77? Altho we have traveled worldwide, age does have its drawbacks. Love charming little inns, but not 5th floor walk-ups.

Joanna, There are all kinds of possibilities and one that you might consider would be to spend a few days in Padova before going to Asolo. There are numerous trains every day from there to Cornuda, which appears to be the closest station to Asolo (current fares listed at €4.70 PP). This website has some information that might help: http://www.frommers.com/destinations/asolo/1729010002.html Another possibility would be Verona, although that likely wouldn't be as convenient for getting to Asolo. I don't know if rental agencies in Italy have an age limit. You might contact www.gemut.com on their toll free number and ask that question. Some additional information for driving in Italy..... For driving in Italy, EACH driver will require the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. Failure to produce an I.D.P. if requested can result in fines on the spot! You can easily obtain an I.D.P. at any AAA office for a small fee (Passport photos required). You'll also need to be aware of the dreaded Zona Traffico Limitato areas, which are becoming increasingly prevalent in Italy ( especially in Florence). Passing through these zones can result in expensive fines! Recent posts here would seem to indicate that authorities in Italy are becoming more aggressive in collecting the fines from foreign drivers using Collection Agencies based here. There may also be charges from the rental car firm for providing renter information to law enforcement. Happy travels!
