Northern Italy

My wife and I are looking at spending two weeks in Northern Italy next year. We are active seniors if that makes a difference. We are in the preliminary stages of our planning and therefore flexible. My thoughts at the moment are to fly into Milan and then take the train to the Lake Como area. Spend probably four days exploring the area. Then go back to Milan to pick up a car and head to Bergamo. We have already been to Milan. Spend three or four days exploring the surrounding area. My son has a friend in Bergamo, so we are hoping he can give an insider's view of the area. Next stop would be Verona for a few days. Lastly we would travel to The Dolomites. Spending four days in the area. We are not set to travel in that order, but it is what I am thinking at the moment. My question to the Forum is does this makes sense and where should we stay, especially in the Lake Como Area and the Dolomites. Also what time of year? I was thinking either late May or early September. When the crowds should be less, before the end of and the beginning of school.
All thoughts appreciated

The shoulder seasons have disappeared, so you will find large crowds in May and September. We were in Lake Como this past May,2025, and sadly it was packed- beautiful but packed. Do avoid the May 1 holiday and weekend- that was ridiculous. I'll attach my Trip Report. I don't know if we will return, and we love the area. We always stay in Varenna. Sorry to be the messenger.
May is early for the Dolomites, as some roads and lifts will not be open yet.
Not heading to Venice?
I am wishing you a wonderful trip. Safe travels!

We have been to Venice twice. One of my favorite cities, unique.
