Northern Italy Christmas Markets and Lodging

My wife and I are planning to spend the month of December in Northern Italy (north of Bologna) visiting the Christmas Markets in Trento, Bressanone, Vipitero, Merano, Bolzano, Arco, Brunico, Glorenza, Trieste, Bologna, Genoa, and Verona. We want to see the Christmas Markets in the evenings, and the more significant historical sites during the day. We prefer to stay in the historical city centers and we will travel exclusively by train. We do not require anything fancy, just a private room and a private bath. We are well experienced winter travelers in Europe who are in their mid-60's and who travel very lightly.

Are there any suggestions concerning the less expensive places to stay, should reservations be made, and what sites should be seen?

Thanks for the assistance,

John

I'll start this off with transport. You can get a 7 day Mobilcard to cover all the local trains and buses and some cable cars and funiculars in South Tyrol for 28 euro pp. So that covers Trento, Bolzano, Merano, Bressanone, Vipiteno, Brunico. You might stay in Bressanone to get a bit more sun, Bolzano is in a deep valley and somewhat shady on the shortest days of the year. Its also fairly central, although not as central as Bolzano.
