Northern Italy

Hi All

We are looking for some suggestions. We have traveled throughout Italy, and this time we are going to be renting a Villa and setting up a "home base". We really enjoy Lake Como and Northern Italy, however from Lake Como there do not seem to be alot of options for visiting other locations for a day trip (other than perhaps Milan, maybe Lugano, Switzerland). So we are looking at Lake Garda, since it seems you can get to Venice, Verona, Milan, Lake Como, even Cortina and perhaps even Innsbruck for a day trip!

Would anyone have any recommendations as to what would be some must see places in Northern Italy and maybe a good spot for a home base that has access for day or side trips? Thanks!

We stayed a couple of nights in Castelrotto in the beautiful Dolomite area and visited surrounding spots including Cortina from there, though we didn't make it to Innsbruck : ( nor did we on our trip to Austria! Boo hoo! Anyway, we loved our hotel! It is very economical and yet very nice. http://www.booking.com/hotel/it/cavallino-d-oro.en-us.html?aid=356980;label=gog235jc-city-XX-it-castelrotto-unspec-us_ca-com-L%3Axu-O%3Aunk-B%3Aunk-N%3AXX-S%3Abo;sid=f04128452851201849d6cb06c56d18e3;dcid=4
We hope to go back one day.

From the Varenna side of Lake Como, local trains also go north to Tirano and St. Moritz. See Milano-Varenna-Tirano schedules through Trenitalia or www.trenord.it. For most other train schedules, try the DB link at How to Look Up Train Schedules Online.

Castelrotto is served by bus from Bolzano. If you stay in Bolzano, on a north/south train line, you'll make a connection at Verona to reach most Italian destinations, but there are a couple of direct trains from there south toward Florence (3.5 hours). Similarly, trains from Lake Garda to north or south destinations (like Bolzano or Florence) will also require a connection at Verona.
