Northern Italy

We will be travelling in Northern Italy in Oct. and thinking about after traveling through Cinque Terra head north and go to Switzerland and take the Glacier Express Train east until we get to an area where we can get off and go the Lakes region. Is this something duable? Would appreciate thoughts on this. Thanks!

There are two ways to do this, both of good. The shorter would be to ride the Glacier Express from Brig to Andermatt, and transfer there via Göschenen to the main line via Gotthard tunnelmdown through Ticino. This train stops at Como; you can bus or taxi from the train station down to the ferry dock and take a boat to your base on Lake Como. Or you could get off in Lugano and ride a bus to Menaggio. Or you could switch at Bellinzona and gonto Locarno on Lago Maggiore. The longer and more scenic route would be to stay on the Glacier Express to the terminus at St. Moritz. You would want to spend the night, I think. Then the next day take the Bernina Express to Tirano, where you catch a train for the 1.5 hour ride to Varenna. You can see these routes on the Swiss Travel System rail map. Google " Swiss synoptic map" to find it.
