Northern Italy 2 weeks Sept/Oct 2019

Hi All, 2 adults, first timers, flying into MiLan. Looking for advice on itinerary, which is still very vague. Thinking of 2 or 3 ?nights Lake Como, 3 nights Dolomites like Bolzano as our base? Then to Verona (or ? small town) 1 night/1 full day, drop off car for train to Venice 2 or 3 nights? Cinque Terre for 4 nights. Then back to Milan for 1 or 2 night, perhaps see Cremona day trip? like to hike, rent bikes, wander, history, small medieval villages. We do like to relax so dont want to pack too much on itinerary, appreciate your help.

Ravenna at Lake Como.

Dolomites look at Cortina d'Ampezzo instead of Bolzano

You can drop the car in Venice, or Verona, either one that is convenient.

You might be one day too long in 5 Terre, perhaps Lucca for a full day or so. 3 full days is quite a bit for that little area, but it is ok, up you of course. Just don't want you to miss things that are close, like Lucca, or even Pisa.

4 nights in the Cinque Terre sounds like a lot. For medieval town centers, Tuscany is more the place. Otherwise, good destinations. Maybe a little more time in Venice.

Hi Deb, I would recommend flying into Venice instead of Milan. Purchase a multi-city ticket, not two one-way tickets.

Itinerary:
Venice - 3 nights
Ortesei (in Dolomites) - 3 nights
Verona - 2 nights
From here there's lots of possibilities.
Some ideas for locations besides or including CT: Siena, Lucca, (Bergamo would be a nice stop from what you're describing & quick transportation to Milan)
Lake Como - 2 nights
Fly home from Milan.

I think Gordon meant "Varenna" instead of Ravenna. Ravenna, a wonderful town, is located on the East Coast of Italy.

2 nights in CT is plenty
3 nights Lake Como - my preference is Bellagio over Varenna. Varenna is to sleepy but does have the train access as a plus if you train from Milan
Not sure Milan is worth 2 nights much more interesting places -

When we did a similar length trip we spent 2 nights in Cinque Terre, 3 in Florence, 4 in Siena with day trips into various Tuscan towns, 3 in Venice, and 2 in Varenna. It was a good mix, although I would have liked more time in Tuscany. We flew into and out of Milan.
