Our tentative plan is to spend time in the Berner Oberland then train into Italy for 10 nights and then from the Dolomite's into Austria. My thought was maybe Lake Como, Verona and then the Dolomite's, but I'm not set on that. We would love smaller towns along the way. Any ideas for us, or possible itinerary? Not sure how far south would be reasonable to head with time constrants and travel times. I'd love to hear your ideas.
Hi Susan and Monte,
I haven't been to the Dolomites but I think that your plan sounds like a good one. Ten days to spend on Lake Como (Varenna?), Verona, and the Dolomites seems perfect! Three nights in each with reasonable travel times between each destination sounds like a fun way to see a variety of regions of Northern Italy!
The track looks good, but I's sure unweight Lake Como in a hurry. It gets old fast.
We are not at all set on those places to visit. I'm trying to find great places to visit that will work coming from BO and then on to Austria. I'd love to see the amalfi coast, but I'm sure that is impossible with our time constraints. We may have business around Milan, so other than that we are free to go anywhere for the 10 days. We really don't want a crowded, resort type area, which I"m afraid Lake Como may be? Any ideas for a more quiet Italian experience...during the summer...impossible?? We also don't want to rush through, stay at least two to three nights wherever we go.
Thanks for any ideas!
Though it's a little south of where you'll be, we spent time in Bologna on our last trip and really enjoyed it! It's a university town with really good restaurants and some small museums--we spent 2 nights and would go back again--especially for the food!
If you're looking for a quiet, beautiful place, I highly recommend Halstatt, Austria. About an 1 to 1 1/2 hrs. out of Salzburg. It is heaven on earth. You can rent a small motor boat and cruise on the "glass" lake which has swans swimming about and is surrounded by the mountains. You can also take a tour of the salt mines there which is also very enjoyable.
Thanks to everyone for your ideas. The scenic rail sounds wonderful, I was wanting to go to Bologna (and found that our business stop is actually Bologna and not Milan like I thought) We have been to Hallstatt and do plan to go back on this trip when we get to Austria.
Thanks for all the ideas!
Try to spend a day in Brescia if you can. It is about halfway between Milan and Verona. Lovely place with some excellent small museums (one is in the castle that overlooks the town and an easy climb up from the square in front of the cathedral). The curators of the museums are very proud of their heritage and happy to share their knowledge. The view from the Castle is fabulous, too.
