Northern Italy

Hi,

We have 4 adults traveling to the lakes area in June. We are flying in and out of Milan. We have 7 days. Three or four of the days we plan to stay in Menaggio area and take the ferry to some of the towns. We are looking for suggestions for the other 3/4 nights? We were wondering about the Dolmonites? We do not have a car and we have been to Cinque Terre.
Thank you so much for your suggestions!

When, exactly, in June? That is early for the Dolomites but later in the month some of the lifts will be open.

There will be some lifts opening in the Dolomites in late May. Ortisei-Alpe di Siusi cable car is scheduled May 20, the Ortisei-Seceda gondola on June 2, and the Ortiseu- Resciesa funicular on June 3. There will be many more June 17 and onward. I will also say, from personal experience, this was a very dry year for snow in the Dolomites. Looks like it will be an early spring. You'll have to go to Milan to Verona to Bolzano to get there as there are no short cuts with public transportation.

Late June will be good. We arrived there June 30 last year and spent a month in Ortisei. Do not go unless you can spend at least 3 nights as it is a lot of travel to-and-from.

We were in the Dolomites the last week of June last summer. It seemed that all of the main tourist attractions were open, including lifts, although we were not at the highest elevations (see other posts here for better detail). It was not crowded. Had some beautiful sunny days. There was sleet one day during a rainstorm and the temps dropped quickly to what felt like 45-50 degrees. Light long pants were comfortable. A light- to medium-weight layer would be good to have for mornings, evenings and changes in the weather. It turned out to be one of our favorite parts of the trip since it is such as contrast with the rest of Italy.

The Dolomites will be completely "open for business" in late June - no worries about that at all. Ortisei is a great place to stay if you want to be accessible to lifts that will take you up to good walking/hiking with incredible views! I'm staying there myself in September and have been many times before. If you want to get to some of the other towns in the area the public bus system is very good.
