Maybe Bergamo? Haven’t been there yet but it looks like a lovely hill town.

Verona (Porta Nuova station) is a direct train ride from Milan (1h 15m). Good day trips from Verona are Venice (Venezia S. Lucia station that is the end of line) takes 1h 30m, Vicenza (30m) and Padvoa/Padua (45m): https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html.

We like Bergamo a lot. It’s an easy train ride from Milan, and there is plenty to see and do there. We were there for a week pre-pandemic, and are planning another trip (for 3 weeks) this fall. Highly recommend it.
