Northern City Suggestion

Will be in Italy in May. Have already seen to Venice, Florence, Rome, Cinque Terre and Sorrento. I need a recommendation for somewhere to stay in the north. I wanted to stay in Vernazza, but the hotel I liked was booked so I decided to try some place I haven't been. I will spend 2 nights in Rome and then I have 3 nights before heading onto Lugano.

I am considering Genoa, because then I would still be able to do Cinque Terre on a day trip again, but also see a new city. I have read a lot about crime there, but I am pretty well traveled so not overly concerned. I am on a tight budget so looking for something around 30 - 40 euro a night for a single. Anyone been to Genoa? or have any other suggestions?

Cora,

There are lots of choices in northern Italy! A few possibilities.....

  • Although you weren't able to secure lodgings in Vernazza, what about trying one of the other C.T. villages? However, €30-40 per night is a bit low, so it might be challenging to find something in that price range. Have a look at This website to see if it might work for you.

  • You could stay in La Spezia, Santa Margherita Ligure or other locations in the area, which would still allow day trips to the C.T.

  • You might also consider Stresa or Varenna (Lago di Como) which would be an easy trip to Lugano.

Incidentally, I've also got Lugano on my list for 2010 and really looking forward to it!

Cheers!

Genoa isn't really an interesting enough place for three nights. A square, a fountain, a couple of buildings, and maybe an interesting street or two, plus an okay aquarium and the old port which is now a mall affair. It's the kind of place that, if you arrive for lunch, you're wondering what to do by supper time.

Look into Varenna. we were there in Oct and loved it. Plenty to do for three days, and it is beautiful to boot! Jeff
