Planning on visiting Ortisei for 3 nights in June as I like to do lots of walking/hiking; initially planned to return to Florence to meet up with my daughter who's flying in and then make our way to Venice (I know backwards!)....but she's cut her trip short and now I'll be meeting her in Venice....so I have 4 extra days and am wondering if I may want to go to another town in the Dolomites before making way to Venice.....I don't have a car as I'm traveling solo....should I go to Cortina, is that possible by bus from Ortisei or Bolzano? thanks everyone....Sandy
Rome2Rio.com thinks it is possible to travel from Ortisei to Cortina d'Ampezzo, and I'm sure that must be a lovely ride: https://www.rome2rio.com/map/Ortisei/Cortina-d-Ampezzo#r/Bus. The thing about Rome2Rio is that you can't trust it on details. I've seen it be wildly off-base on fares, travel times and frequencies. I'd say a bus that runs only twice a week--as Rome2Rio indicates for the Ortisei-La Villa leg--is hardly worth considering, but perhaps it operates more often than that. If you keep digging down through the Rome2Rio website, you'll find the name(s) of the bus companies involved and most likely a link to their websites, where you can get accurate schedule information. I don't know how much of risk there is of a weather cancellation in June, however.
Rome2Rio also shows some options from Bolzano, including a mixed train/bus route, but they take longer.
Should you decide not to spend the additional time in the Dolomites, I'll point out that there are some great towns right on the rail line you'll travel en route to Venice: Verona, Vicenza and Padua. I spent several nights in Padua in 2015 and found a lot to do there. (The Scrovegni Chapel ticket needs to be purchased at least one day ahead of time.) I enjoyed a day trip to Vicenza. Other excellent side trips from Padua include Ferrara and Bassano del Grappa.
If you like hiking Cortina is better than Bolzano in my opinion. 60Km far on a scenic route and from Cortina you can reach other very interesting location including the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. In my opinion worth the effort to spend some hours in connections if there isn't a direct bus, but you can even enquire your hotel for a direct transfer there by car with driver. Or maybe try to find some mates to share the cost and arrange a full day tour. June isn't probably the top season but a lot of people go there. And hitchhiking?
thank you.....I have also emailed the people at the place I'm staying at in Ortisei to see what they have to say and am waiting to hear back.
