My wife and I are planning a multi-week visit to Northeastern Italy in either the early Fall of 2027. Our ideal situation would be a smaller town with close proximity to a rail line so we could take day trips or short overnights . Want to time it with a return cruise to the U.S. Any ideas or suggestions?

Fall begins around Sept 21. Do you mean Sept or Oct? Multi-week - 2, 3, 4 or more? NE Italy - do you mean around Trieste? Venice? Bologna is a big train hub with many day, and 1-2 night trips. But I wouldn't define it as NE Italy.
