Northeastern Italy

Anyone have advice about northeastern Italy? We never hear of anyone raving about Trieste, Udine, or Aquilea. I've been curious about these places as destinations from Venice and also for access to Istria. Comments please.

You might try those sections of the TripAdvisor Italy forums if you don't get a lot of responses here. They're remarkably detailed.

These places are not on the US tourist radar - which doesn't mean they're not worthwhile. I haven't been to them myself, but am definitely interested. The New York Times did a piece in their Travel section last year about Trieste, and it confirmed to me that I need to go (I've always been intrigued) http://tinyurl.com/8m85tyx A friend of mine went to Udine a few years ago, and his visit happened to coincide with a food festival (September). He loved it, and especially appreciated the lack of "tourism" (of course, lots of people were in town for the festival, but they were almost all Italians, and he found Verona quite unpleasant and "touristy" by comparison). As for access to Istria, I wouldn't count on it being easy. I haven't looked recently, but connections in that region in general are not like those between, say, France and Germany (more like those between Spain and Portugal).
