North or South to Rome in mid-September

My wife and I are looking to spend 10 days traveling in Italy, ending with a long weekend in Rome.

I've never been south of Rome and thought starting in Salerno-(night ferry)-Naples-Amalfi-Rome would be fun. Another option is to start in Milan-Lake Como-Cinque Terra-Rome.

We're seasoned travelers looking to mix some mingling with the locals with some cool sites and nature, and don't mind getting outside our comfort zones if it leads to good fun! Thoughts?

Hi Tom,

Either north or south would be great but I'd look at flying into Milan but going from the train station directly to your first night stop.

You might chose either Lake Como or Cinque Terra (3 nights), rather than both since they are sort of similar and then add another smaller (than Rome) city.

One option would be Verona (2-3 nights).

Another, Bologna (2-3 nights) and if you haven't been there, Orvieto (2-3 nights) on your way to Rome.

It just depends on where you've already been in Italy.

I think you would like the casualness of South of Rome. More friendly with the fun paseo nightly in Sorrento during warm months. The Southern Italians are quite diff than the Northerners whoo are thought to be more refined and business-like. Give Capri a go one wkend and enjoy.
