gaby,

For travel from Verona to the Cinque Terre, using the excellent rail system would be a better idea. It's not necessary to go to La Spezia "early" as it's a very easy trip from there to the five towns of the Cinque Terre. For example, the trip from La Spezia to to Riomaggiore is only about 9 minutes.

Your profile doesn't indicate where you're from, but a few points to keep in mind regarding rental cars.....

  • Each driver listed on the rental form will require the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which is used in conjunction with your home D.L. These are easily obtained at designated agencies (AAA in the U.S.) and are valid for one year.
  • You'll need to be aware of the dreaded ZTL (limited traffic) areas which exist in many Italian towns. EACH pass through these will result in expensive tickets, which you may not know about for many months.
  • You'll also have to be vigilant to avoid the speed cameras and the Traffic Tutor system which monitors not only instantaneous speed but also average between two points. If you violate either one, expensive tickets will follow.

Having said that there are also some potentially expensive caveats to be aware of when using pubic transit in Italy. If you need more information on those, post another note here.

Which of the five C.T. towns are you planning to stay in? I would highly recommend getting hotels booked WELL in advance!

Hi
Mantua and Parma are a couple of good stops, Parma in particular. Great city, great food. Have some cheese.

I have driven this route but we went to Portovenere instead of La Spezia. Close enough. We went to Portovenere so we could boat to 5 Terre instead of train. It is great to see the towns from the sea. However, La Spezia to 5 Terre is easy and quick.

You mention visiting Tuscany and Umbria after 5 Terre. You could do Tuscany before 5 Terre. Umbria and the south after. It is a day's drive to Sorrento from Tuscany basically. It is over 300 miles from Florence, the capital of Tuscany. This kind of itinerary is very common on this site. 5 Terre is actually a bit out of the way for most trips to Italy. If you can you may want to make your trip more efficient and see more things by bypassing 5 Terre. I have to say it is pretty cool there but it can present problems. Your choice of course.

If you really wanted to add a day or two, you could drive from Verona to Lake Garda which is out of the way but not terribly so and would have some pretty roads to drive on plus hotels will have parking.
Otherwise, your plan of a car doesn't make much sense if the only purpose is to get you from Verona to La Spezia to drop off a the car and catch a train there, when you could just catch a train from Verona and avoid the car.
Don't think there are any pretty Italian countryside roads on your way if that is what you had in mind, looks like mostly highway which is not really something memorable vs. taking the train to save time, money, convenience.
Any of the cities you might want to visit along the route or a little off route like Padua, Parma, Bologna, Modena will have ZTL restrictions and having a car for that one night stay will be a hassle there as well.
Keep in mind where you would be renting/dropping off a car is rarely right where a train is so you have logistics of dropping off the car and then getting to the train station which also adds time and money.

Not to mention, there is some fear visiting an area in Italy while your car is parked somewhere with your luggage.

The trains from La Spezia to CT run really late, so no really time worries.
Just wait on the car until you are leaving Florence and use it to visit Tuscany and drive through Umbria ;stretches of roads there will be very scenic and I assume you would take a few days to get down to Sorrento.
It should not be a problem to get a 1 day rental pickup in Florence and drop off in Sorrento a few days or week later

If I rent a car in Venice and go to La Spezia or Levanto Or portovenere by car is a good idea,
is there any place where can I stay for 1 night.
then our idea is from la spezia or portovenere go to cinqueterre 3 nights.
Train to Florence 3 nights
