nook or Kindle?

I'm not interesting in 3G or always on internet. We are just looking for an e-book for travel. I've heard the biggest downside is reading outside. Any experiences? Pros and Cons of each? I've done research and find they seem to run neck and neck. I'd like to hear your comments! Thanks!

I have a kindle. I believe the Nook and Kindle are pretty much equal except the nook has a glossy color screen at the bottom while the kindle is pretty plain. My kindle holds a charge pretty well but I turn off the web function to lengthen the charge. Reading outside isn't too big of a problem because the screen isn't glossy. I bought a cover which adds weight unfortunately but gives it more of an open book feel. Plus the cover acts likes a shade if needed. I've mostly replaced all my book buying with my kindle and if I can't get a book on kindle I get it at the library. Don't bother buying a guide book for your e-book because they aren't easy to flip thru.

they are pretty much neck and neck in thrid party reviews. my wife loves her kindle. if i get one, it will probably be a kindle unless B&N gets significantly healthier as a corporation.

I like my Nook. I take it on every trip. I buy at least 2 new books before I go. It holds a charge for a long time and is easy to travel with and use. Donna

I have a Kindle and I love it. It is great for reading outside in the sun, it really doesn't reflect sun glare like laptops do. I do have a skin protecting the screen though I don't it changes much. I also turn off the wireless function to make the charge last longer, but I've also found it charges really quickly overnight when in a hotel. I don't know the Nook, the Kindle was a birthday gift and first ebook reader I have had so far.

The new Kindle is far better than the Nook as far as price and hardware are concerned. But, I will never buy a Kindle since you can't sync freely available ePub books on it like you can on the Nook. With that said though, I always recommend the Kindle to my non-techie family and friends.

I have the Kindle and my husband has the Nook. There really isn't much difference from what we can tell, but I feel like my books are a little cheaper (a dollar or two), and my battery lasts a little longer. I also like being able to get on the internet (it is NOT the most efficient or quick, but it is free and worked while we were in Italy and I didn't have access on my phone). I think you'd be fine with either option....

This is also being discussed over on the Tripadvisor forums and one of the people living in Italy there said the Nook can't buy books if you are outside of the US yet. If you planned on buying books while gone, look at the Kindle. If you expect to buy all your books before you leave, still a tossup. I like the iPad myself, have the Kindle and Nook apps installed so I can buy either Kindle, Nook or iBooks books and choose between them. Can also listen to music while I read or play a game or go on the internet with WiFi if I'm not in the mood to read.

Check to see if your public library offers ebooks as that could influence your decision. I just discovered that I can check out ebooks from my library. Their ebooks are compatible with nook and sony, but not with kindle. I found that interesting.

I would be interested in downloading books from sites like Gutenberg (sp) or Google books eg classics by Dickens, Trollope, Austen etc. Are you able to do this with Kindle machines or are you limited to Amazon offerings?

I have the latest Kindle and think it is great. I thought Amazon has more titles available than Barnes & Noble...is that right? I'm surprised to read that another poster actually uses the Internet on the Kindle. I find it pretty useless and have never succeeded in reading my email on the Kindle. Even so, that doesn't stop me from giving it a four and a half star rating. By the way, you can listen to music on it while you read and you can also purchase audio books for it.
