My husband and I just got into Verona this afternoon and were amazed at the amount of people on the streets. We arrived at 4 o’clock on a Saturday. We’re worried that tomorrow will be the same and I am wondering where can we go where there won’t be all the crowds and it will be interesting. I wanted to go to Lake Garda tomorrow but I’m afraid they’ll be way too many people. Please help. If you can also recommend any good restaurants we would appreciate it
If you head to Lake Garda, go to the lovely town of Saló. It isn’t on the US tourists’ radar at least.
Ristorante Orologio at Porta Nuova, 7/B a short walk from Piaza Bra is my favorite in Verona. Wonderful menu, a vast selection of very good wines by the glass. Both times I have eaten there, my partner and I were the only non-locals in the place.
Is the Basilica di San Zeno on your list? Fascinating bronze doors (seen from inside the church), Mantegna altarpiece, frescoes, ceiling, other treasures. There will be Sunday services to work around, and other tourists interested in art and beautiful churches, but you’ll be away from the fake-balcony crowds and the main center of town. There’s a small fee.
San Zeno will be much less congested, cool neighborhood too. Teatro Romano is another option, it is across the river off the main tourist route. Good view of the city and cool Roman stuff.

Walking the busy crowded streets of Verona on a nice Saturday afternoon is paradise found for many - Italian and tourist alike. It doesn't mean it will be inordinately crowded at all other times.
