Non-smoking hotel rooms in Italy

Are hotel rooms in Italy smoke-free by law, or do we need to request a non-smoking room when making reservations? We are planning our first trip to Italy and non-smoking rooms are important for us. Thanks for your help!

All my rooms in Italy were smoke free (I was there earlier this month). But I asked for it. Some hotels are only smoke free and others offer both. A lot of the hotel websites should mention it.

Thank you Alicia! I appreciate the information, and will be sure to ask when we make reservations.

As you get closer to making your decision, check reviews on Tripadvisor. Smoking problems are a frequent topic for certain hotels.

Slightly off-topic, but do be aware that since restaurants in Italy are now all non-smoking indoors, this means that the outdoor tables all allow smoking. So if you want to sit outside to enjoy the atmosphere, be aware that it might get polluted with cigarette smoke from your neighbor right when your food arrives.
