non alcoholic drinks

Since I am the designated driver of my party of three, I am not going to be tasting wine while driving the Tuscan countryside ( I'll wait till I get back to the apartment). Other than water what is a popular non alc drink in Italy? I've heard of Chinotto and that sounds interesting. Anything else? I don't care for sugary drinks.

We've lived in Italy without drinking alcohol and do the same when traveling there. Chinotto is one option but you can also get sparkling waters, juices, teas (including canned lemon or peach teas), and coffee drinks as well as a number of non-sugary beverages.

And you can walk to Cantinetta da Verrazzano in via de' Tavolini, near piazza della Signoria, where you can taste wines without having to drive ;-)

San Pellegrino makes Limonata which is a tart, fizzy lemonade. It's not that sweet but likely has sugar. They have pear, orange and grapefruit flavours which I haven't tried. They probably have other Chinotto-like beverages - slightly bitter but refreshing.

Or you could swirl and spit.

In addition to the cantinetta suggested by asps2, there is also the Vineria Fratelli Zanobini on via Sant'Antonino, near the corner with Via Dell'Ariento, next to the San Lorenzo Market. At the food truck at the corner you can have a Panino with Lampredotto (a Florentine specialty) and wash it down with the wine.

Just wanted to point out that JiminVa doesn't exactly state that he will be in the city of Florence (just Tuscany), so the responses suggesting Florence restaurants don't really apply.

I like fizzy/sparkling water with a slice of lime. You could always sip the wine, and then spit it out.

Spitting out wine in a public place??!! Chinotto may be a little bitter, so you might enjoy that, but it's more of a between-meals beverage.

The OP noted that he would be tasting wine in the Tuscan countryside, so I assumed he would be visiting vineyards and such. If so, according to Wikipedia (I trust it in this instance) and personal experience, "it is not considered rude to spit out wine at a winery, even in the presence of the wine maker or owner. Generally, a spittoon will be provided. In some regions of the world, tasters simply spit on the floor or onto gravel surrounding barrels. It is polite to inquire about where to spit before beginning tasting."

It sounds like you're interested in cold drinks. If you stop at a caffe' you can order "caffe' shakerato" which is espresso shaken with ice cubes in a martini shaker, then poured into a glass. I find it very thirst-quenching. Since you don't like sugary drinks, be sure to say "senza zucchero" when you order. If you're lucky, it will be served in a martini glass. :)

Maryam, should have known what you meant - I blame travel fatigue, sorry.

The caffe shakerato will sometimes cost considerably more than a caffe freddo, but it will be made fresh. Caffe freddo is cold coffee from the fridge. Both are usually available at bars, perhaps neither will be at some restaurants.

Zoe, no problem at all! I'm just glad you are made it through, and a bit jealous that you actually get to experience travel fatigue at this point. Wish I was spitting wine in some Tuscan vineyard right now!
