No train tickets found! Now what?

I didn't think we had to buy far in advance (for July 16), but we found no tickets on Trenitalia, going one-way from Venice to Milan (we're doing the infamous 7:00 a.m. flight out of Milan and are trying to get there the night before).

What are our transportation options to Milan from Venice?

Plenty of trains going that direction. Buy your tickets once you're in Venice.

With a 7:00 flight, you'll probably want to stay close to Malpensa - a 45 minute to an hour bus ride from Milan's Central Station. Here's a link to my effort to gather hotel suggestions near the airport.

That is impossible. Could be 20 to 30 trains a day to Milan. Sometimes the trains are not posted till 60 days out. Wait a couple days and try again or try bahn.de for schedules.

PS. When I original posted this my mind was thinking Rome to Milan. There is not that many trains between Venice and Milan but there will be several. Also, the distance is short so the high speed might not save that much time over a IC.

We will (nervously) wait a few more days. It is exactly 63 days out.

I'm hoping we can get on one of those brand new high-speed trains.

Thanks for your replies. I'll cry for help again if there are no results posted in a few days.

And by the way, info on economical way to get from Milan's train station to our Malpensa hotel is much appreciated! I noticed it's a 45-minute drive from Centrale to our airport hotel. Grazie!

Wait a few days. I just tried July 12....all trains were available. July 16 and 17....none...yet. I don't think they're on sale yet.

The shuttle bus would be the easiest way to get from the Central train station to the airport. And then a taxi to your hotel if they do not pickup at the airport. The bus ride is about an hour.

I had this problem last year. It has to do with the annual update of the website, which occurs in early summer. I suggest looking a few days before (same day of the week would be good) to get an idea of the schedule. You can pick you're time slot and then just confirm once you are there, or when the date gets closer. I actually called a travel service for help with this last year and was told that it happens during summer every year. The schedule should stay roughly the same. Good luck.

Maria, you are looking out too far on the Trenitalia website. Trenitalia updates their website in mid-June and mid-December of each year. So even though we are only a month away from the update, you often get squat. CLICK HERE to see the current schedule. You'll be departing from Venezia S.L. and not Mestre. Click on All Solutions to see them all for the day. Don't worry. The schedule will change little or not at all on the update.

Hi Maria - You really don't need to worry about booking in advance. My husband and I just got back from Italy and went to 6 different places and bought train tickets the day of or 1 day before we left each destination. There are so many trains and seats available that you don't have to worry. It's not like flying where you have to book in advanced. We went from Milan to Venice and had no problem...many different times to choose from. I'm sure it's the same going the opposite direction as well.

Have a great trip!

Maria, for a 7:00am flight out of Malpensa, you need to stay near the airport. The buses from Milan central don't begin until about 5:00am. That puts you at the airport close to 6:00am. This won't do unless you engage a private taxi at some expense. Some hotels near the airport have shuttles. Last option, sleep in the airport. Its done a lot. See www.sleepinginairports.com. They even rate them.

Thanks so much for these comments! I may wait to get the tickets, if they are so readily available as Marla says.

Thanks, Larry, for the advice. We do have a hotel right near the terminal(the First Malpensa) that provides early shuttle; we just need to take a bus from the Milan train station to our hotel in the late afternoon or early evening. Hope we can figure that out when we get there...

I'm glad I read this. I was going crazy the other day trying to find trains from Florence to Pisa and on to La Spezia in early July. Couldn't find anything after June 13, so I guess that's when they'll update the new schedules. I was worried maybe there was going to be rail work or something and the train just wasn't going to be available. Thanks for posting!

Relax. You will not have any trouble getting tix in Venice for a trip to Milan. This is a relatively short trip and there are many trains daily.
