We would be very interested in any suggestions regarding places/restaurants/events with traditional music, or operas, or festivals in general in Rome next week.

Three words: Trastevere, Trastevere, Trastevere. The Piaza of Santa Maria is Trastevere is a great community gathering place with musicians and artists. They even had a military band give a concert one Sunday afternoon when I was there. I got some takeaway food and ate by the fountain. The restaurants are awesome and usually inexpensive. It is a safe area and full of wonderful culture.
