Nightclub/Discotech for 18 year olds in Rome

There are nine of us headed to Rome in late May. Three couples each with their 18 year old graduating senior from high school. One of the graduates will be turning 18 while in Rome. The other two would like to take her out to a Nightclub or Dance Club for a few hours on her birthday. Are 18 year olds even allowed in these clubs? Are they safe to go? Where would I find more information on options with regard to this? Any information would be helpful. Thanks. Mike

No problem with kids thier age getting into clubs. Although there is a legal age for drinking it's not enforced. My 16 year old has ordered a beer a few times with no problems. As far as being safe...why not? I've felt safer anywhere I've been in Italy as opposed to the states.

Like anywhere, they should at least be aware of the possibility of someone using date rape drugs in the clubs. It happens, but a little knowledge can help avoid any problems: don't accept a drink from someone else, don't leave your drink unattended, and don't drink alcohol to the point where it impairs your ability to think clearly (better yet, don't drink it at all when in the clubs). Not to be all dramatic, but Natalee Holloway was on a high school graduation trip as I recall. BTW, they'll need this awareness for college, too.

Just remind them that young, Italian men can be very very forward. Not so much anymore, but there was a time when traveling single women were advised to wear wedding rings so they didn't have to deal with unwanted advances. Also, Italian men take visual cues quite seriously whether it be just a smile from a girl, eye contact or what they are wearing. I should know, after several Italian trips back when I was a single guy, not once has a local girl ever smiled back at me...hint taken!!
