Evening Trains from Sorrento to Naples to Rome

I have signed up to take the Amalfi Coast tour (in a couple of weeks) using the Shared Tours Mondo Guide that Rick Steves mentioned. I received information that the tour will end around 6-ish PM and I will need to return from Sorrento to Rome...it will take me about a little over an hour to get from Sorrento to the Napoli line via the Circumvesuviana to transfer to the Trenitalia or Italo (estimated 8:00-ish) and return to Rome. Is it safe for me to be taking these trains during these hours; I am a little concerned around the Naples train station. However, it will still be daylight. I am a woman traveling alone and am rather petite...

Thank you,
Veronica

You should be fine. There will be lots of other passengers at that time of night.

Don’t be afraid. You may be petite, but unless you look like an anchovy, Neapolitans won’t eat you alive on top of a Neapolitan pizza.

The only concern is that the last high speed Frecciarossa to Rome departs from Naples at 7:30pm and a slightly slower Frecciabianca departs at 7:36pm. After that you have a slower Intercity at 8:31pm, which however takes 2h16min (vs 70 min on a frecciarossa) or a very slow Regionale train at 8:45pm, which takes almost 3 hours. Beyond that there are only night (couchette) Intercity trains.
Italo is an option too, but their last train departs even before 7:30pm (at 7:18pm)

You can take the escalators from the Circumvesuviana platforms to the main hall, there is no need to exit the station area if you are worried.
7:30 PM is "well before dinner time" in Naples, the all city is out&around.
