Night train from Rome north…?

Hi all,

We will be traveling from Rome to Tirano to do the Bernini. We thought it would be nice to not ruin a day traveling..but take a night train and sleep as we go north. Couldn’t really find anything off hand. Maybe I just don’t know where to look.
Any ideas on having a good nights sleep on the rails as we head north from Rome?

Thanks! Mark

You should just sleep in someplace nice like Varenna on Lake Como for a night or two.
You have to change trains in Milan to get to Tirano and Varenna is a stop on that route.
Rome to Milan direct train takes 3 to 4 hours.

There are overnight trains from Rome to Venice/Trieste, Vienna and Munich. None of those will really be helpful for you. The high speed trains have taken over the Rome-Milan route.

It is only 3 hours to Milan by train. Night train options are not pretty. One drops you in Bologna at 3:30 am, then puts you on a night train to Milan at 5 am, The other goes from Tiburtina station at midnight and drops you in Piacenza at 6 am and puts you on a train to Milan at 6:30. Neither sounds like "having a good nights sleep on the rails".

Most night trains have been cancelled after the advent of high speed trains starting in the 1980s and 1990s. As mentioned above from Rome to Milan it's just 3 hours on high speed trains nowadays, then from Milan to Tirano there are regional commuter trains that are not as fast, since they make numerous stops, but cover that distance in just a couple of hours. As for the possibility of sleeping on trains, that for me would work only after several glasses of wine (and some melatonin).
