Night stop between Parma and Rome

Hi. Our Tuscan vacation will end with us in the Parma area (we're making a pilgrimage to Verdi's town of Busseto). The next day we'll be turning in our rental car in Rome and flying home.

Rather than spending the night near Parma and driving 5 hours to Rome the next morning, we'd like a recommendation on a nice town to stay in, along the A1/E35 highway, about half-way between Parma and Rome. It looks like Arezzo is the nearest city to the mid-way point, but we'd really rather enjoy a smaller town with easy off/easy on to the highway.

We are splitting our trip between countryside agriturismos and in-city stays in Siena and Florence, so as a final experience we'd like to stay inside a small town. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks!

As a matter of fact, I was considering Orvieto! It's larger (I'm really looking for a village), and a bit farther south than I was wanting, and we were already planning to spend a half-day in Orvieto earlier in the trip (after a night in Civita), but I might re-work things to save Orvieto for last, doing a late afternoon, evening and night there before heading to Rome the next day.
NOTE: We're planning to spend the last night in Rome before flying home, so there's no great problem with staying farther north the day before we turn the car in.
