Nice to Rome with 2 nights to spare with family. Ideas?

Greetings from down under,

Travelling as a family of 5, (older teens) we will need to make it from Nice to Rome, and have 2 nights up our sleeve on the way. Having a rental car is optional however we don't want to arrive into Rome with a car, and we would have already driven from Florence to Rome, so don't necessarily need to cover that again. We would have already stayed in Florence & Venice. We don't want costs to be too high, but would love some suggestions of how to spend that time. We would've loved to see the Amalfi Coast, but realise it's probably cramming it.

Thanks ahead of time.

For once, I think a recommendation to stay in the Cinque Terre is more than a reflex. It's on your way by train. Your kids should love it for the hiking and exploring. You can let them roam. And it makes up for missing the Amalfi Coast.

Thanks for your help...do you have any suggestions of where would be a good place to stay? I'm not familiar with that area at all.
