We want to travel from Nice to Rome in Sep 2010; would like to stop in Portofino (1 nite) & Cinque Terre (2 nites) before continuing on to Rome. I gather we have to transfer in Genoa but not sure what's the closest train station to Portofino. Any suggestions re itinerary?
I would suggest that when buying your tickets in Nice (Nice Ville station) you may only be able to buy tickets as far as Genoa. This is fine. You will most likely change trains there anyway. At Genoa, buy a ticket from Genoa to Santa Margherita-Ligure which is the closest train station to Portofino. At the same time, you can buy your tickets from Santa Margherita-Ligure to your town in the Cinque Terre.
If you have really planned well, you can even buy your tickets from your CT town to Rome. For your Rome journey, you will most likely change trains in La Spezia Centrale to a faster train that requires seat reservations so plan well. These tickets will be for a specific train, date and time. You might even be able to get an advanced purchase discount. If you choose not to buy the CT/Rome tickets early, you can easily purchase them in the CT.
