Nice to Cinque Terre - driving a good idea?

My wife and I will be in Monte Carlo on a company awards trip this month, and will have the last 3 nights to spend on our own. We were thinking of driving to Cinque Terre (trains take too long I am told), but are concerned about the drive time between Nice (where we'll rent the car) and Cinque Terra. We must also return to Nice at the conclusion of the trip to fly home.

Is Cinque Terre a viable option or should we look else where? Also, will crowds be bad there in mid-August?

It's just slightly over 5 hours for a train ride from Nice to Monterosso in the Cinque Terre. One train change in Genova. You may find parking limited in the CT. There are two pay lots in Monterosso and Riomaggiore and in peak season, they are full and they often close the roads to them. See www.cinqueterreonline.com and click on Travel Tips to look at parking information.

CT is very crowded in August, but go anyway.
