Any suggestions?

Jr, For a very nice and reasonable B&B in Varenna, Lago di Como, consider Orange House BnB. Very central, warm hosts, good breakfast. Short walk downhill from the train station and near the lakeshore too. Everything is very walkable in Varenna. Recommended by RS. Sorry, I haven't overnighted in Verona. Hope that htis helps.

Look at Rick's Graffiti Wall for herotic B&B experiences. There are some great places around Lake Como with very positive comments. The Alpine mountain scenery is breathtaking around there.

JR, It would help if you could provide some idea on your criteria for "inexpensive". Also, are you interested in only Hotels or other types of accommodations as well? For Hotels in Verona, I'd suggest checking the Guidebook or Trip Advisor for ideas on hotels that fit your criteria. Hotel Torcolo is very popular, and rooms there range from about €70-140 per night for a double, and that doesn't include breakfast. I stayed at Hotel Europa on my last visit, and would certainly recommend it. It's very close to Piazza Bra, so the location is excellent. For rooms on Lake Como, your choices will depend on which town on the lake you plan to visit? The usual favourite with most here is the small town of Varenna, which is about an hour from Milan by train. If you decide to stay in Varenna, there's quite a range in accommodations, which include: > Albergo Milano > Albergo Olivedo > Royal Hotel Victoria > Hotel Villa Cipressi > Orange House B&B > Hotel Eremo Gaudio (located up on the side of a hill - great view but more effort to get to - best to use a Taxi from the station). You could also stay in towns which are close to Varenna. Bellagio is only about 20 minutes by Ferry. Some hotels there are on the "posh" side with prices to match, but I believe there are reasonably priced accommodations there as well. The lowest priced accommodations in that area is probably the La Primula Hostel in Menaggio, which is only a short Ferry ride from Varenna. They currently indicate prices of €38 per person for a twin room. Cheers!

I'm assuming you're actually asking about Verona and not Varenna. If so, we absolutely loved Residenza Carducci in Verona. It's a B&B style apartment rental, just across the Adige River from the historic center. Extremely reasonably priced and Giovanna, the owner, is wonderful. We enjoyed our trip there in May 2011 that we're going back in May 2013. Here are some photos I took in Verona, in case you're interested: Verona in May 2011

We loved the Eremo Gaudio in Varenna. Excellent views for a very reasonable price. We walked from the train station to the Eremo, which took us about 20 minutes or less. We did this with our packs and our Jack Russell in August...hot but totally doable. If you are not in shape or packing a lot of bags take the taxi. The walk into Varenna itself from the Eremo is about 10 minutes. It is on a hillside, but if you are in shape it is a piece of cake to walk.
