is Nice a good location to spend a month in October. My husband and I are traveling through Europe and want to spend a month in southern France during October. We are looking for a good place to be our base for travel to other areas of southern France and into Italy.
In that area, and right at the border I like Menton. However it depends on what you want to explore. Distances are longer than you might think just looking at a map. For example if you plan to visit Provence, it's at least 2.5 - 3 hours to get there from Menton. Cassis is equally distant. To visit Nice, Montecarlo, and maybe some area in the nearby Italian Riviera then it's ok.
I like Menton as well, but it all depends on if you are going to rent a car or use public transportation. A car is really necessary if you want to visit the Luberon area for example. Also if you post this question on the France forum instead of Italy, you will receive more feedback.
The season is right, and Nice is wonderful, but it's too far east if you want to travel around 'southern France'. Look at Aix-en-Province and sketch out travel times to different areas depending on your mode of travel.
