Well, we've one last place to book on our Italy trip-- except we can't seem to find an open, affordable hotel in Varenna-- a consequence of traveling during high season in August. What's the next best choice, considering we'll be coming in by train and will want something within reasonable walking distance of public transportation? Our fall back is to stay in Milan and just take a day trip up, but I think we'd enjoy the lake more than Milan.

Thanks, Kent. I found a pretty reasonable hotel in Menaggio called Hotel du Lac. Nice reviews on Trip Advisor and Venere, but I noticed they're all from last year Aug/Sept '08. Seems sort of odd that there's nothing more recent. And, no reviews on Expedia. Anyone know anything about this hotel, or have other feedback on Menaggio itself? Thanks a bunch!

For an alternative to a hotel , check out lakecomohomes.com and look for an apartment called Della Fontana. We just returned from a wonderful stay . The apartment is in Fiumelatte about a 20 minute walk from Varenna. It has amazing views and is beautifully furnished.

We just returned from a wonderful few days on Lake Como. We stayed, as suggested, in Varenna for two nights, but due to circumstances moved to Bellagio for the third. We loved loved loved Bellagio and our hotel, Hotel Centrale (which incidentally turned out to be cheaper than our Varenna hotel).
I will say that it was more expensive to get around the lake than I thought it would be.
Have a wonderful time on the lake. It lived up to its reputation!
