Newbie in Italy 🇮🇹

Hello - Planning a trip to Italy early September with my family..party of four. Our arrival city is Rome. I’m still researching /planning other towns. We’ll be visiting friends in Bari and Puglia. Ravello and Positano caught my eye on this forum. Any suggestions on hotels in Ravello and Positano or any towns near Bari to visit. Thank you

In order for people to be helpful, you need to include more information. How long do you have, and what are your interests? Do you plan to spend some time in Rome? Getting a good guide book might be a starting point. Your local public library probably has some to lend. Btw, Bari is in Puglia.

Thank you for the tip Rosalyn.

Our trip is from 9/3- 9/15. We arrive in Rome for 2 nights and will probably return for one or two nights when we return home. As I previously mentioned we will be visiting friends in Bari and Puglia. I am still planning what towns to visits between Bari and Puglia. This forum is very helpful.

It is helpful to know how many nights you have? Do you arrive in Rome on the 3rd or the 4th? leave on the 15th- what time?
That would be 12 or 13 nights- first day in Rome is your jet lag day- so doesn't really count for much.

How do you plan to travel? Rent a car? Take trains?

How many nights are you planning for the Bari/Puglia part?

Rather than splitting your time in Rome many here will suggest going straight to your furthest destination on arrival- Bari/Puglia- then working in a stop somewhere on your way back to Rome. End your trip with all your Rome days together.

Rome itself needs a minimum of 4 nights- 5 would be better.
4 nights really equals just 3.5 days.

There are many nice places in Puglia, including some nice seaside towns. You could easily split your time beteen Puglia and Rome. But alo consider visiting Matera. If you drive Maratea, south of Naplea, is beautiful. The coastline is like an undeveloped Amalfi Coast.

Rome and a Puglia plus Matera will fill all your time.
In Puglia we enjoyed Lecce, Locorotondo, Polignano a Mare, Monopoli, Trani, Alberobello, Ostuni and Bari. Matera was very interesting too.

Since you'll be at the Rome airport, you might just as well continue on to Bari. Flight is 1 hr05 minutes. There are 5-6 flights a day on Alitalia airlines that are relatively inexpensive.

Thank you All

The reason for staying in Rome first is because one of my daughters will only be staying for 5 days. We wanted to do Rome together for a few days then head out to Puglia, then she will head out to Rome for her flight home. I have just started planning the first leg of the trip.

Hi Maria, I am a local, I know Puglia well. I completely agree with Becky and Suki. Hope this helps, If you need more info, I am happy to help you

If you want to visit the Amalfi Coast, I would suggest going from Bari to Salerno and taking the ferry (or bus) to the town of Amalfi. Though I’ve stayed in Positano, I prefer staying in Amalfi because of the bus connections to Positano and Ravello as well as the ferry. I’ve stayed in both towns and prefer Amalfi because it’s the transportation connections, less expensive hotels (though in September it’s still high season) and fewer tourists. But visiting the other towns is a must. In Amalfi, I stayed at the Villa Anna Lara. A small hotel with fantastic views over Amalfi and the sea.

After your stay, return to Salerno and take Trenitalia to Naples or Rome.

Thank you Robertodaniello

Have you heard of La Corte Dell’astore resort?
I also read a must see in Puglia the Grotto de la poesía.
